A residental Oasis over a bustling market

Rye Lane Market typified Alan Camp Architects’ attitudes to the creative use of difficult sites and making new urban communities.

The development is literally built on top of the existing Rye Lane Market, refurbishing it and creating covered arcades for market traders.

Above, perimeter blocks of affordable new homes are focused on a generous central court for shared use of residents. The court captures sunlight, has excellent natural surveillance and is sheltered acoustically and visually from the bustle of the surrounding Peckham streets and market below.

Inventively using an already-occupied site, Rye Lane Market creates a safe haven within a congested urban environment.
